The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has said that flooding on the newly redeveloped section of Boduthakurufaanu Magu is occurring because work to install the road’s drainage pump stations is still ongoing.
In a statement issued on Thursday, MTCC clarified that while the road has been reopened for public use, several key components of the drainage system have not yet been completed. The company said the construction of three pump stations, designed specifically to prevent flooding along the road, remains underway.
According to MTCC, work has been accelerated under the guidance of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, with the installation, testing and commissioning of the three pump stations scheduled to be completed by August 15.
The company assured the public that until the drainage system becomes fully operational, it will continue efforts to remove accumulated rainwater during periods of heavy rainfall to minimise disruptions and inconvenience.
Flooding was reported on parts of Boduthakurufaanu Magu following heavy rainfall after the recently completed northern carriageway was reopened to traffic, raising concerns among road users.
The redevelopment of Boduthakurufaanu Magu forms part of the government’s wider initiative to modernise Malé City’s road network and implement a long-term solution to the capital’s persistent flooding issues. The project includes road widening, upgraded pedestrian infrastructure, utility improvements and a modern stormwater drainage system aimed at improving resilience during periods of heavy rain.
