The Maldives Police Service has warned the public against walking or running across the Sinamalé Bridge, saying bypassing barriers to access the bridge as a pedestrian poses a serious risk of accidents.
The Maldives Police Service has warned the public against walking or running across the Sinamalé Bridge, saying bypassing barriers to access the bridge as a pedestrian poses a serious risk of accidents.
Police said pedestrian access across the Sinamalé Bridge has been strictly prohibited since the bridge was inaugurated on August 30, 2018. Despite the restriction, some individuals have been observed bypassing barricades installed at the airport-end walkway of the bridge.
Police said such unauthorized activity creates a significant risk to public safety. As part of efforts to prevent pedestrians from entering the bridge, “No Pedestrian” signs have been installed in the area.
The Police Service urged the public to comply with the signs and barricades and warned that legal action will be taken against individuals who disregard the restrictions, in accordance with relevant regulations.
The Sinamalé Bridge connects Malé with Hulhulé, where Velana International Airport is located, and Hulhumalé. Since its opening in 2018, the bridge has served as a major transport link between the capital, the airport and Hulhumalé, carrying vehicles between the islands.
