President Calls for Digital Investment to Strengthen Tourism

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called for increased investment in digital innovation, artificial intelligence and skills development to strengthen the resilience and competitiveness of the Maldivian tourism industry while preserving the human touch at the heart of Maldivian hospitality.

The President made the remarks in his message marking World Tourism Day 2026, celebrated this year under the theme “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism.”

The President said rapid advances in digital technology and artificial intelligence are transforming the global tourism industry, changing how travellers discover destinations, plan their holidays and experience tourism.

He highlighted the opportunities these technologies present for the Maldives to improve visitor services, engage travellers and strengthen its position in an increasingly competitive global tourism market.

The President stressed that the Maldives must continue investing in digital capabilities and developing the skills needed to adapt to technological changes. At the same time, he emphasised that innovation should not come at the expense of the characteristics that have made the Maldives a world-renowned tourism destination.

The President said technology should complement rather than replace the personal interaction, warmth and authenticity that define the Maldivian tourism experience.

The President also expressed gratitude to everyone working in the tourism sector, recognising their contribution to establishing the Maldives as one of the world’s leading holiday destinations.

Tourism is a key pillar of the Maldivian economy, generating foreign exchange, supporting employment and creating economic opportunities across the country’s islands. The sector has also played a significant role in connecting Maldivian communities with millions of visitors from around the world.

The President said continued innovation, collaboration and investment in people will be essential for maintaining the strength of the industry as global tourism continues to evolve.

The President further reaffirmed the importance of protecting the Maldives’ natural beauty, cultural identity and distinctive hospitality while embracing new technologies that can contribute to a more resilient, sustainable and future-ready tourism sector.

The President also shared a World Tourism Day message on his official X account, reiterating the Maldives’ commitment to harnessing digital opportunities to strengthen the future of the country’s tourism industry.
