President and First Lady Depart for Unofficial Singapore Visit

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed departed for Singapore last night on an unofficial visit, the President’s Office has confirmed.

The President and First Lady left the Maldives on Saturday night, September 26, according to the President’s Office. No further details regarding the purpose or duration of the current visit have been announced.

The visit comes more than a year after President Muizzu made his first State Visit to Singapore in June–July 2025, at the invitation of Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. That visit coincided with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Singapore.

During the 2025 State Visit, President Muizzu held talks with President Tharman and then-Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation between the two countries. The discussions covered areas including infrastructure development, urban planning, renewable energy, water and waste management, education and tourism.

The two sides also witnessed the signing of memoranda of understanding on capacity building, sustainability and environmental cooperation, and higher and vocational education. Discussions were also held on strengthening economic cooperation, including efforts towards concluding a Bilateral Investment Treaty.

President Muizzu also participated in a high-level investment forum and visited Singaporean institutions including Tuas Port, the Institute of Technical Education and the Urban Redevelopment Authority to study Singapore’s experience in areas relevant to the Maldives’ development priorities.

The latest visit is President Muizzu’s second unofficial visit to Singapore this year, with the President’s Office previously confirming an unofficial visit in May 2026.
