VIA Named Indian Ocean’s Leading Airport for 13th Time

Velana International Airport (VIA) has been named the Indian Ocean’s Leading Airport 2026 at the World Travel Awards, marking the 13th time the Maldives’ main international gateway has received the prestigious regional title.

The award was presented during the World Travel Awards Asia, Oceania & Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony, held at CROSSROADS Maldives. Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) CEO and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed attended the ceremony and received the award on behalf of VIA.

VIA secured the title ahead of other leading airports in the Indian Ocean region, including Ivato International Airport in Madagascar, Roland Garros Airport in Réunion, Seychelles International Airport, and Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in Mauritius.

The latest recognition comes as Velana International Airport continues to undergo significant development aimed at expanding capacity, improving facilities and enhancing the overall passenger experience.

Commenting on the award, MACL CEO and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed said the recognition reflects the dedication of the company’s employees, ongoing progress at VIA and the contribution of its partners.

“As the Maldives main gateway, we remain focused on raising standards, enhancing the passenger experience and positioning VIA as a modern, efficient and globally competitive airport,” he said.

The World Travel Awards, established in 1993, recognises excellence across the global travel and tourism industry, with awards presented to organisations and destinations across different regional and international categories.

The latest award adds to Velana International Airport’s record of recognition in the Indian Ocean aviation sector, while highlighting the airport’s continuing role in supporting the Maldives’ tourism industry and international connectivity.

MACL said it remains committed to further developing VIA and providing a safe, efficient and welcoming experience for passengers travelling to and from the Maldives.
