STELCO to Hold Excavation Parties Accountable for Power Network Damage

State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has announced that parties responsible for damaging its power distribution network during road excavation works will be required to bear the full cost of repairs and restoration of electricity services.

STELCO said accidental damage to its power network during road excavation projects has been causing repeated electricity disruptions, resulting in significant inconvenience and distress to members of the public.

In response to the increasing frequency of such incidents, STELCO said it will take steps to hold accountable those responsible for damage caused through negligence during excavation works.

Under the new measure, parties found responsible for damaging STELCO’s electricity infrastructure will be required to cover the full costs associated with repairing the damage and restoring the affected services.

The company said the move is aimed at reducing avoidable power interruptions and protecting the public from disruptions, while ensuring a consistent and reliable electricity supply.

STELCO urged all institutions, contractors and other entities involved in road excavation works to exercise due diligence and carefully plan their activities to avoid damaging existing electricity infrastructure.

The company also stressed the importance of taking necessary precautions before carrying out excavation works, particularly in areas where underground power cables and other utility infrastructure are present.
