The Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) between the Government of the Republic of Maldives and the Government of the Republic of Türkiye officially entered into force on Saturday, 1 August 2026, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.
The agreement, which was signed on 4 November 2024, became effective following the completion of all legal and procedural requirements by both governments.
According to the terms of the agreement, both the Maldives and Türkiye fulfilled their respective domestic legal procedures required for the PTA to take effect, in line with Article 25 of the agreement. Following the completion of these procedures, the two governments exchanged final notifications confirming that all necessary legal requirements had been met.
As mutually agreed by both parties, the agreement officially entered into force on 1 August 2026.
The PTA is expected to enhance trade relations by providing preferential market access for selected goods traded between the Maldives and Türkiye. Such agreements typically aim to reduce or eliminate tariffs on specified products, facilitate greater trade flows, improve market opportunities for businesses, and strengthen long-term economic cooperation.
The Maldives and Türkiye have steadily expanded their bilateral relations in recent years, with cooperation extending across trade, investment, tourism, education, health, and infrastructure development. The implementation of the PTA is expected to further deepen these ties by encouraging increased commercial activity and creating new opportunities for exporters and importers in both countries.
The agreement represents another milestone in the Maldives’ efforts to diversify its international trade partnerships while fostering closer economic engagement with Türkiye.
