Velana International Airport (VIA) has handled its first Sea to Air cargo shipment from Cambodia, expanding its cargo network and strengthening trade links between Southeast Asia and Europe.
According to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), the shipment arrived in the Maldives by sea before being transferred at VIA onto a flight to Lille, France.
MACL said most Sea to Air cargo handled through VIA currently originates from Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka. The addition of Cambodia expands the airport's regional network and strengthens its role in connecting Asian and European markets.
Sea to Air shipping combines the lower cost of sea freight with the speed of air transport, helping businesses reduce costs while shortening delivery times. It is commonly used for time sensitive goods such as electronics, fashion products and medical supplies.
MACL said the milestone further strengthens VIA's position as a logistics hub in the Indian Ocean as it continues to expand its cargo operations.
