Pres. Highlights China-Backed Projects, Calls for Wider Cooperation

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pointed to China-backed infrastructure, housing and economic initiatives as tangible examples of the Maldives-China partnership, while calling for expanded cooperation to support the country’s development ambitions.

Speaking at a reception marking the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Muizzu said the relationship with China has developed from longstanding maritime and diplomatic ties into a broad partnership with a direct impact on the lives of Maldivians.

The President highlighted the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge, housing developments, education and technical training as some of the areas where Chinese cooperation has contributed to national development.

He also highlighted growing opportunities for trade and economic engagement under the Maldives-China Free Trade Agreement, saying the partnership should continue creating opportunities and supporting prosperity as the Maldives works towards becoming a developed state by 2040.

Muizzu said the Maldives-China relationship was elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership following his state visit to China in 2024, describing the upgrade as a reflection of the depth of bilateral ties and the two countries’ ambitions for the future.

The President said the Maldives intends to further expand cooperation with China, including through China’s four global initiatives and in areas that align with the Maldives’ national development priorities.

He also stressed the importance of stronger international partnerships as global instability, climate change, technological changes and economic uncertainty create challenges for small island developing states.

According to The President, the Maldives is particularly exposed to global economic shocks because of its geographic and economic circumstances, making international cooperation important for strengthening resilience in areas such as food, energy and economic security.

He said the Maldives-China relationship dates back centuries through Indian Ocean maritime routes, which facilitated the movement of goods, ideas and cultures between the two countries.

The President said the partnership should continue to serve as a connection between the two countries, describing the Friendship Bridge as a symbol of the broader relationship.

“A bridge is never only made of concrete and steel,” The President said, adding that the Maldives-China partnership should remain a “bridge to opportunity and prosperity.”

He also underscored the importance of people-to-people relations, highlighting education, entrepreneurship, connectivity and exchanges between communities as foundations for sustaining bilateral ties.

The President concluded by expressing his appreciation for China’s continued support and reaffirming the Maldives’ commitment to strengthening the partnership for the benefit of both countries.
