10 Gang Leaders Under Investigation

Investigations are underway against the leaders of 10 gangs as authorities intensify efforts to dismantle organised gang networks across the Maldives, Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Minister Ali Ihusaan has said.

Speaking at the “Ahaa” public forum, the Minister said 53 targeted operations have been conducted to curb gang-related activities.

More than 10,450 individuals have been searched during the operations, resulting in 517 arrests, while 670 motorcycles have been towed over violations identified during the operations.

The Minister said 26 locations described as “safe houses” have also been dismantled.

He said the locations were allegedly used by gangs to recruit minors and draw young people into criminal activities.

According to the Minister, investigations into the leaders of the 10 gangs have been ongoing since June as authorities work to disrupt organised gang activity.

He also said increased police presence in areas associated with gang activity has been accompanied by efforts to help young people leave gangs and enter the workforce.

The Minister said no deaths linked to gang violence have been recorded during the current administration, compared with an average of two to five deaths annually from 2007 until the administration came to power.

He attributed the decline to measures taken to curb gang activity and said efforts to dismantle gang networks and prevent young people from becoming involved in crime will continue.
