Vice President Attends Opening of 81st UN General Assembly Debate

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has represented the Maldives at the opening of the General Debate of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The Vice President attended the opening session held at the UN General Assembly Hall, where leaders and senior representatives from UN member states gathered for the annual high-level debate.

The General Debate provides a platform for countries to present their national positions and address major international issues, including global peace and security, sustainable development and cooperation among nations.

During his visit to New York, Vice President Latheef is scheduled to participate in a number of high-level engagements on behalf of the Maldives.

His programme includes delivering national statements at thematic forums, holding bilateral and multilateral meetings with representatives of other countries and participating in official events held alongside the General Assembly.

The Vice President’s participation comes as the Maldives continues to engage in discussions at the United Nations on issues affecting small island developing states, including climate change, sustainable development, financing and international cooperation.

The 81st session of the UN General Assembly brings together representatives of the organisation’s 193 member states for discussions on global priorities and matters of international concern.
