MPL updates stakeholders on port move

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) held a high-level stakeholder consultation on Thursday to discuss the relocation of the Malé Commercial Port to Thilafushi.

The meeting, held at Meeruma, brought together representatives from government ministries, state institutions, and state-owned enterprises to share updates on the project and gather feedback from key stakeholders.

Speaking at the session, MPL CEO Captain Hussain Shafeeg said stakeholder input is essential to the successful implementation of the project.

He said the consultation aims to gather information needed to move forward with the physical works while ensuring the new port is developed in a way that meets the needs of all relevant institutions and provides greater convenience for businesses.

The relocation of the Malé Commercial Port to Thilafushi is one of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's key economic pledges. The President has said the new state-of-the-art port is scheduled to be completed and officially inaugurated by November 11 next year.

According to the government, relocating the port to Thilafushi will permanently address the space limitations and operational challenges faced by the existing Malé Commercial Port while strengthening the country's trade and economic development.
